Have you ever wondered about what we usually call impossible? What is that that makes us believe that certain things are possible to happen while some others are impossible? Let’s try to identify and share some advice that can help turn the impossible into possible.
Truth is that most people tend to think of specific things as impossible even though there were cases they were proved to be wrong. As an example, they think it is impossible or really difficult to get rich if you come from a poor family.

This impossible logic is a common belief for the majority of the population. It is what the masses things about and what most practical minds of this world also do. Practical minds are excellent to identify problems and accumulate knowledge while they usually lack imagination. This is what makes them think and claim that certain things are probably impossible.
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
Albert Einstein
Taking time to think a little bit back in history we can understand that possibility is almost always the belief of rebels and innovators. The possibility is also the belief of dreamers, and of those who dare to turn the impossible into possible and finally change the world.
All those people who did it seem to have certain similarities in the way they approached the impossible. These similarities are identified and shared in this post as bits of advice to help you turn the Impossible into possible.
However, I think it is also important to mention some of the things that when taken too much into account block or prevent our possibilities.

What Prevents You From Trying To Turn The Impossible Into Possible
1. Be Aware of Your Negative – Limiting Beliefs And Their Power
The truth is we are all susceptible to this. We all tend to hold on to our previous negative experiences more than to our positive ones. It is this fear we all have that something bad will happen and we will never make it. We are afraid that we will fail so we mostly believe that certain things are impossible.
This assumption we make that something is impossible leads us to adopt a defeatist attitude. This attitude is the beginning of manifesting limiting beliefs which in no way serves when we want to make something happen.
“You are only as limited as your beliefs.”
Jennifer Ho-Dougatz

Holding a strong possibility mindset might be the key to addressing those limiting beliefs. It is important to understand the difference between the possibility mindset and wishful thinking. A strong possibility mindset means you start working on making things happen while in wishful thinking you wait for them to happen on their own without taking any action.
In most cases, wishful thinking or not a well-developed possibility mindset may lead to inaction and analysis paralysis.

2. Those Who Claim Authority Aren’t Always Right
It has been proven many times in the past. The history and evolution of this world are full of authorities claiming that this is it and a crazy man coming out of nowhere and stating that they are wrong. How many examples can you recall?
Galileo and the earth moving around the sun is one. He never assumed that the authority claiming that earth is immovable was the only truth. He was the crazy man who said they were wrong, and so was Durbin to claim that humans evolved from monkeys.

But not only in the sciences. Think of Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, or Gandhi. They all were crazy enough to question the authorities, to dream the impossible and make it happen.
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Nelson Mandela
Same stands for all athletes who break the world records. There was a time when breaking specific time limits was thought impossible yet some athletes questioned them and fought against all odds.
3. Questioning Your Possibilities Means Questioning Yourself.
When we question what is possible for ourselves what we do question is ourselves. If we take some minutes we can all find moments of our journey when we accomplished amazing things. Things we thought were impossible. Yes, everything is possible when we decide to face our fears and move on despite them. After all, we have done it already.
“You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.”
Ralph Marston

10 Bits of Advice to Help Turn the Impossible Into Possible
1. Pay Attention to Your Hunches, Your Imagination, Your Wants
Whatever we can see now in our physical world was not visible in the past. Innovations, technology, and even ourselves we all are now in a place we hadn’t been in the past.
Every innovation was once an idea in a person’s mind who just found it interesting enough to stay with it for a long period. Nobody knows everything all from the beginning and neither has everything figured out.

Somebody might wish to paint but has no hands. Does this mean it is impossible to paint? We are aware of people who paint with their feet or even their mouths. If you want something and you can imagine yourself doing it, it can happen. Paying attention to your hunches, listening to your guts, and being able to imagine it is the first valuable piece of advice to help you turn the Impossible into possible.

2. Start Thinking of How Your Vision, Dream, Wishful Thought Could Become Real
When you can identify what is that you need and be able to imagine it you perform a mindset shift. From that point on you move your mindset from fixed to growth. Which is a necessary step to turn something impossible into possible.
Do you need to find out more information about something? Do you need to find money, from investors or even from making some savings on your own? Just start thinking of how your dream could become real and what you can do about it.
“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
Neil Gaiman, Coraline
3. Challenge Your Fears and Your Limiting Beliefs
When you have done all this thinking about how your dream can come true it is almost certain that you will start questioning whether it is possible or not. Normally, you will probably start feeling fear.

Most people have created this perception about the world and themselves which they have believed is their only possible reality. We believe that this is who we are and this is what we are capable of. Both ourselves and our fears must be challenged. We may think that something is absurd for us and exactly this is why we must confront it.
No matter how absurd an idea might seem when confronted with a possibility mindset can turn into reality.
“In order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd.”
Miguel de Cervantes

4. Make a Plan And Start Working on it – Turn the Impossible Into Possible
Having fought all your limiting beliefs and your fears and having thought of what must be done to turn the impossible into possible, what follows next is a plan. A clear plan of specific actionable steps to be followed.
You might not be able to have everything figured out all from the beginning but plan at least those first steps you can identify that will help you get started. Having adopted the growth mindset you are working in the possible area. Each action you plan and work on it is no longer a wishful thought. This is the time when you must work hard, have faith in your dream, and show perseverance.

Nobody knows everything all from the start. Start with small steps, set up small goals, accomplish them, and celebrate each one of these small victories. These small victories are there to change your limiting beliefs and show you the way while you move from impossible to possible.
Do not be impatient. Big accomplishments, great success, and huge victories take time. Most people are eager for instant results which when do not arrive leave them with disappointment. Keep working hard and have faith in your dreams.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
St. Francis of Assisi
5. Commit Yourself And Keep Working On It
A good plan which is not followed by a commitment to work on it can easily turn into just another dream. Even if we have all the needed steps identified and planned, it doesn’t mean a thing if we don’t commit ourselves to work on them every single day.

It is this simple. If I want to run a marathon I must run every day and if I want to be a writer I must write every day. This period of commitment is the longest one. To become good in something you must attain mastery and to attain mastery you must turn all needed actions into habits.
Turning actions into habits takes time. However, repeated actions turn into habits through your commitment to perform this repeated engagement.
“Habits stay with you even when you don’t have the motivation.”

6. Understand Your Weaknesses And Work On Improving Them
It is important to be aware of your strengths if you want to accomplish something. However, I would say that it is of equal or even biggest importance to also be aware of your weaknesses.
To acknowledge your weaknesses means that you can do what is necessary to work on them and improve them. Shutting your eyes on your weaknesses or not being willing to change something that it isn’t working is like you condemn yourself to failure.

Sometimes we get used to doing things in one specific way, our way. This shouldn’t make us blond-sighted and prevent us from a whole new world of different ideas and possibilities.

7. Don’t Let Failures and Disappointments Hold You Back
Failure should not be seen as the end of the game. Failure should be seen as a step in our road to success. Each failure, small or big should be thought of as a lesson to become wiser and better.
Failures of the past do not define our future. We might have felt disappointment in the past but this does not mean that whatever we do in the future will also turn into a disappointment.

It is as if though people are by default trained throughout our lives to accept the impossible thinking as reality. We believe that we cannot accomplish things, that we are not good enough to make it, that the time is not right etc. We can even mention examples of other people who have tried and failed and possibly this is what will also happen to us.

8. Ask for Help When Needed or For The Things You Don’t Know
Nobody knows everything and hardly ever one person can do everything all by himself. As mentioned above it is important to acknowledge our weaknesses and work on improving them but it is also important to admit that maybe there are specific things that we cannot do all by ourselves.
In these cases asking for help is the only viable option. Depending on what we need help for we might hire someone to do specific tasks or we could collaborate with someone we share the same vision with.
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”
Helen Keller
9. Be Aware of the Power of Combining Imagination, Belief and Action
Everything that has ever been accomplished in this world started as an idea that a person once imagined. That person believed in this idea and took action by starting working on trying to turn it into reality. And having the faith that this that seemed impossible could become reality led to a magical thing happening. The impossible turned into possible.
“Everything you can imagine is real.”
Pablo Picasso

Imagination is powerful. Through imagination things that never existed turn into possibilities. And what it takes to make it happen is to have faith in ourselves and the things we can accomplish. Instead of putting all our energy into thinking of the worst-case scenarios, we could put it into imagination, faith, and hard work.
“It is better to believe than to disbelieve; in so doing you bring everything to the realm of possibility”
Albert Einstein
10. Get Excited to Face the Impossible As The Challenge That It Is
To deal with what you think of as impossible is a huge challenge. Isn’t it what it is after all?
It is said that the feeling of being terrified and extremely anxious is quite similar to the feeling of excitement. And excitement is what we should feel when trying to turn the impossible into possible. After all, it is impossible. Nobody believes it will ever happen. Nobody else except us of course.

And if something is true about trying to turn the impossible into possible is that it is a challenge worth taking.
“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
An excellent example of a person who challenged himself with what he thought of impossible is Ronald Forbes. In his TEDx speech “Making the Impossible Possible” he talks about his unique experience as an athlete coming from a poor country like the Cayman Islands. You may watch his speech below.
Final Thoughts on Turn Impossible Into Possible
Impossible for many things is mostly a state of mind, a belief, and an already existing perception. Understanding this and working on trying to turn the impossible into possible can only be valuable for our self-growth and self-perception. Trying to do so is the only way to explore our full potential.
Talking about sciences and innovations trying to turn the impossible into possible is the only way that progress can ever be accomplished. Evolution in each aspect of science is the result of imagination, belief, and hard work.

Great, thought provoking piece as always. This type of defeatist thinking limits so many people from their potential in so many facets of life. You just come to accept that things are how they are you can’t change it.
